The world gets smaller every day: borders open, migrants move, tourists travel. Diseases know no boundaries: consider the threat of Ebola or HIV, or the most recent and accurate example: the COVID-19 pandemic. The urge for adequate local healthcare grows daily, for both the countries in need and for the sake of worldwide health. Global health doctors play an essential role in tackling health issues enhanced by migration and inequity in access to healthcare.
A dedicated group of members of the Dutch Society for Tropical Medicine (NVTG) has therefore launched the international campaign ‘Into the world’ in 2016. The primary goal was to raise awareness for the role of Dutch Medical Doctors in Global health and Tropical Medicine and to secure the continuation of their postgraduate medical training.
The campaign included a book with personal stories and perspectives on international health, a website, a symposium, a social media campaign, and fund-raising.
‘Into the world’ started off as an international awareness campaign for the work of global health doctors and their postgraduate training programme. Over the years, Into the world has grown into a platform, focusing on awareness as well as education regarding Global Health.
‘Into the world’ aims
- Increasing awareness on the contribution of Dutch MD’s Global Health and Tropical Medicine in healthcare settings worldwide.
- Creating a Global Health platform; for sharing news, articles and educational purposes among global health professionals.
- Let the voice of young MD Global Health and Tropical Medicine be heard.
